Update:

KPop Demon Hunters was one of the hits of the summer, becoming the most-watched movie on Netflix and one of the most-searched costumes on Google for this Halloween. And to no one’s surprise, a sequel is already in development to show us more about HUNTR/X. The couch will have to wait.

According to Bloomberg, Netflix and Sony have finalized an agreement to develop a second film. For now, the sequel is expected to arrive in 2029, considering the long development times that animation can require, especially when the goal is to repeat the success with a sequel that is as good as, or better than, the original work. It is worth remembering that Sony Pictures Animation has taken its time to develop its sequels, the most recent case being the long wait between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).

An unexpected success

As mentioned in the Bloomberg article itself, the success of KPop Demon Hunters was truly unexpected. So much so that it is surprising that we have not officially had any figures, stuffed animals, or any other merchandise that could have made the phenomenon even bigger. Sustaining the success of KPop Demon Hunters will be an interesting task for the streaming service, although considering how long it has taken to follow up on its own original series in recent years, from Stranger Things to Squid Game, we can only wait and see what it has in store for this partnership with Sony. For now, we’ve already seen KPop Demon Hunters as part of Fortnite’s activities, with a game mode and outfits throughout October.

What is Kpop: Demon Hunters about?

The film follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who are in charge of keeping demons away from the earthly plane where all human beings are found. Through music, different generations of female demon-hunting warriors have taken on this difficult task, placing a barrier called Hoonmoon.

HUNTR/X, the band formed by these three singers and dancers, needs to channel people’s energy to form the ultimate barrier for the demons, who, on different occasions, have sought to break through to do evil; however, all attempts by Gwi-Ma, the main demon and antagonist, have failed.

Not until one of the demons gives him an idea: fight fire with fire (or, well, in this occasion, K-pop with K-pop) and form a boy band (Saja Boys) to steal the fans from HUNTR/X, take the souls of the humans, and finish off the slayers once and for all.
