Leaked trailer for Spider-Man: The Great Web, a canceled multiplayer game from Insomniac

The trailer for Spider-Man: The Great Web, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man multiplayer game that will never see the light of day after being canceled, has been released.

The leaks that hit Insomniac Games at the end of last December were one of the most important events in the video game industry in the year 2023. Several months later, and without knowing exactly if it is something from that leak, it has been revealed that this studio is working on Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Web, a multiplayer game based on the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise on PlayStation consoles.

Spider-Man: The Great Web would have been PlayStation’s long-awaited multiplayer Spider-Man

The trailer for Spider-Man: The Web appeared “out of nowhere” on Streamable, a video upload site, on March 12, 2024. As we commented, we don’t know if it’s part of the massive leaks of December 2023, or if it’s another separate and independent action from that. We leave you with the video uploaded to YouTube below:

In this video, we can see that The Great Web was a multiplayer video game for up to five people set in the Spider-Man universe that began with Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 in 2018. This project would have had game-as-a-service touches with different seasons, cosmetic elements, daily shop, and other elements typical of the genre a la Marvel’s Avengers. And we say “would have” because this project has been canceled and will not see the light of day.

This is a real shame because from what has been shown, it can be seen that this video game would be either ready to go on sale or in the final stages of development. What can be seen in the leaked trailer gives the impression of being a fairly polished title and made with great care.

The trailer, narrated by Yuri Lowenthal - who voices and lends his face to Peter Parker in the original version of the game - shows us how The Great Web flirts with multiverses and up to five different Spider-Man travel around New York to face the Sinister Six. In one of the scenes in the trailer, we can see who would be in this incarnation of the Sinister Six team: Venom, Electro, Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Scorpion, and Shocker.

Throughout the video, cooperative action is also shown, such as taking down enemies alongside another Spider-Man, something we saw in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 itself when we played Miles and teamed up with Peter or vice versa at a crime scene in progress.

Sony would have canceled the title for its game-as-a-service approach, taking into account market trends. This is strange because just a few days ago Warner Bros. announced that despite the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the success of Hogwarts Legacy, they would prioritize games as a service over single-player titles which was the best-selling title of 2023 with 22 million copies sold.
