Liam Neeson announces his retirement from action cinema at 72 years old
British actor Liam Neeson is hanging up his action hero cape, as he announces his retirement from the genre due to his advanced age.
One of the most illustrious actors in the film industry from the past several decades is Liam Neeson. The british actor built a space for himself through a large number of works, being recognized for his role in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Schindler’s List’, considered one of the best films in history; but he is also remembered for his portrayal of Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn in ‘Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace’ or even a film that is a Christmas classic like ‘Love Actually’. Absolute versatility, but it was with the ’Taken’ franchise that he showed his side as an action hero, in which he has stayed comfortably in recent years. Now, however, he’s saying goodbye to that kind of role.
What is the reason for his retirement? The actor is clear: “I’m 72—it has to stop at some stage.” Neeson is known for performing his own fight scenes, but his characters’ most complicated stunts are performed by stuntman Mark Vanselow, with whom he has been working for a long time: “You can’t fool audiences. I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.”
Liam Neeson, action hero
With more than a dozen action films, Neeson is one of the biggest names in the genre in recent times, achieving several box office hits. The doubts surrounding his physique in the future and the fact that one day he will not be able to punch convincingly have made him lean towards this decision. But what about his future? Continuing in the film industry with other types of roles is an absolute possibility with the future premiere of a new ‘The Naked Gun’ movie starring him coming soon.
Liam Neeson plans to retire from action films in 2025, but there is still no exact date or moment: “Maybe the end of next year. I think that’s it.’
