Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is making a 180-degree turn with its next title. Gone are the streets of Kamurocho in favor of sailing the seas like a modern pirate. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will star Goro Majima, who travels to a nearby island in Hawaii to find his way as the new King of the sea. In the chronology of the series, it is set after the events of Infinite Wealth. It will arrive on February 28, 2025 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.

From Yakuza to Like a Dragon: a change to the future of the saga

Yakuza: Like a Dragon was the last installment to carry the name that SEGA placed on the brand in the West. The company sought to unify the branding so that it would be recognizable in all the markets where it is available, maintaining the way it has always been known in Japan. But the seventh main chapter also marked the change of direction. Kiryu passed the baton to Ichiban Kasuga, a protagonist who quickly gained the affection of fans.

Since then we have received all kinds of titles. From a direct sequel, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, to small projects that reuse many of the strengths of its formula, such as Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Along the way, there was also time to refurbish previous releases like Like a Dragon Isshin, which until its launch in 2023 remained exclusive in Japan.

The future of the saga looks brighter than ever. Its numbers grow with each chapter and little by little it has entered SEGA’s plans for its expansion in the West.
