Sony Pictures

‘Madame Web’’s first reactions are far from positive

The new movie in Sony’s Spider-Man universe is getting first reactions and reviews and they mention that it is worse than ‘Morbius’.

Update:
Dakota Johnson Madame Web

‘Madame Web’, the next movie in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, will be released tomorrow, February 14th, and with it, the first reviews and opinions from the critics were not long in coming.

After a first trailer that raised more doubts than interest in the movie, the first reactions were not entirely positive. Currently, the film, which stars Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, Sydney Sweeney and Celeste O’Connor, has a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to gross between $30 and $35 million at the box office.

What are critics saying about ‘Madame Web’?

With its Rotten Tomatoes score, you can expect equally scathing reviews, and we’ve rounded up some of them.

The Hollywood Reporter’s review by Lovia Gyarkye calls it “an airless and stilted endeavor driven by a mechanical script. For his part, Rolling Stone’s David Fear has a tough start, commenting on the title, “‘Madame Web’ Isn’t as Bad As You’ve Heard. It’s So Much Worse,” with a comment as harsh and blunt as “‘It’s the Cats: The Movie of Superhero Movies.” Meanwhile, Variety’s Peter Debruge notes that “the script is confusing, the action stale and the visual effects cheap,” and that it “feels like a throwback to the kind of unimaginative superhero movies Hollywood produced before Marvel got its act together.”

There are also comments on social media that do not soften the blow, such as Sean O’Connell, managing editor of Cinema Blend, who delivers a harsher blow, with comments ranging from “One of the worst movies ever made, in any genre” and “It makes MORBIUS looks like THE DARK KNIGHT”....

More of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe on the Way

For better or worse, Sony’s movies inspired by characters from the Spider-Man comics will continue this year. While the MCU has made changes to its schedule and will only have Deadpool & Wolverine in the middle of this year, the Sony Spider-Man Universe will see the arrival of Kraven the Hunter in addition and Venom 3. While the first Venom movie has been the best received by critics to date (with 57% on Rotten Tomatoes), it remains to be seen if Sony will continue to try and grow this universe as more characters are yet to make their movie debut.
