Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy set earns $200 million in a single day

Hasbro’s crossover with Square Enix becomes the fastest-selling MTG expansion ever, outpacing Lord of the Rings in hours.

Update:

The Final Fantasy Universes Beyond expansion for Magic: The Gathering has shattered records, earning $200 million in revenue within 24 hours of launch. According to Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks, the crossover outperformed every previous MTG set, including 2023’s Lord of the Rings, which took six months to reach the same milestone.

Sold like hot cakes

Several factors contributed to the set’s explosive success:

  • Dual fanbase appeal: MTG players and Final Fantasy fans flooded stores and online retailers
  • Serialized cards: Limited-edition foils featuring Cloud, Tifa, and Bahamut drove collector frenzy
  • Streamer hype: Unboxings and deck builds dominated Twitch and YouTube within hours
  • Preorder scarcity: Booster boxes and Commander decks sold out before launch, with resellers marking up prices

Cocks confirmed that Wizards of the Coast increased production four times pre-release, yet still couldn’t meet demand.

What’s in the set?

The expansion includes:

  • Iconic characters: Cloud Strife, Sephiroth, Vivi, Tifa, and more
  • New mechanics: “Limit Break” keyword and multi-color summons like Knights of the Round
  • Commander decks: Themed around FF worlds and factions
  • Arena support: Digital versions available in Magic: The Gathering Arena

Some cards, like Meteor Smash and Cloud, Hero of Midgar, are already fetching triple-digit prices on secondary markets.

Hasbro expects a “long tail” of sales, with restocks planned and more Universes Beyond sets on the horizon. Upcoming crossovers include:

  • Spider-Man (September 2025)
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender (November 2025)
  • Rumored: Elden Ring, World of Warcraft, and Zelda

The Final Fantasy set’s success is also fueling speculation about a possible MTG animated series or film adaptation.
