Mahershala Ali’s ‘Blade’ is officially dead — and the actor says Marvel simply didn’t want to make it

It was the worst‑kept secret in Hollywood, and now it’s finally official: Marvel Studios’ long‑promised Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali will not move forward. After nearly seven years of delays, director shake‑ups, script rewrites, and a production that never truly got off the ground, Ali has confirmed he’s walked away from the project — and his comments make clear where he believes the real problem was.

A reboot trapped in Marvel’s development limbo

Marvel announced the new Blade back in 2019, hyping it as the triumphant return of the vampire hunter to the big screen more than 15 years after Wesley Snipes wrapped his trilogy with Blade: Trinity (2004). In between, the character appeared in a little‑known TV series starring Kirk Jones, but the Ali casting — a two‑time Oscar winner for Moonlight and Green Book — was supposed to mark a major new era for the character inside the MCU.

Instead, the film became one of Marvel’s most troubled projects. Directors came and went, scripts were rewritten repeatedly, and production never reached a stable starting point. The movie remained stuck in development while the MCU itself went through its own creative turbulence.

Ali breaks his silence — and points directly at Marvel

In a new interview with GQ, Ali confirmed he’s moved on and no longer expects to play Blade. He didn’t hide his frustration, saying he hates leaving projects unfinished. But his most revealing comment was blunt: “If they had wanted to make it, we would have made it.”

With that line, Ali makes it clear he was ready to commit — and that Marvel Studios, in his view, never showed the will to push the film across the finish line. It’s a definitive end to his chaotic, stop‑and‑start tenure as Marvel’s next vampire hunter.

The Blade we technically did get

Oddly enough, Ali did appear in the MCU as Blade — just not on screen. He recorded a brief voice cameo in the post‑credits scene of Eternals (2021), speaking off‑camera to Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) as Whitman prepares to pick up the Ebony Blade. The moment was meant to set up Whitman’s future as the Black Knight and Blade’s formal introduction into the MCU.

Now, that tease looks like a promise Marvel won’t fulfill — at least not with Ali.

What’s next for Blade?

The character’s future is once again uncertain. Wesley Snipes returned as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), though that appearance seemed more like a tribute than a long‑term comeback. Marvel could still reboot the character with a new actor and a fresh creative direction, but the high‑profile 2019 version is effectively finished.

After nearly seven years of development hell, countless setbacks, and a movie that never even reached the starting line, Mahershala Ali’s Blade leaves the MCU the same way he entered it — without ever showing his face.
