Makoto Shinkai’s blockbuster ‘Suzume’ now available on Netflix

A masterpiece of Japanese animation reaches the masses thanks to Netflix.

‘Suzume’ was released in Japan in 2022, but it wasn’t until April 2023 that it was available in the West. Now, a year later, the latest from the great filmmaker Makoto Shinkai is coming to Netflix and will be available to a wider audience, who will now have the opportunity to enjoy one of the best animated films of recent years.

You can enjoy ‘Suzume’ on Netflix in both English and Japanese with subtitles. The synopsis of the movie is as follows: “A 17-year-old girl named Suzume helps a mysterious young man close the doors to another world that are causing disasters across Japan. After the huge success of ‘Your Name,’ Shinkai released ‘Weathering With You’ and later ‘Suzume,’ the latter of which was an outstanding success without reaching the enormous heights of ‘Your Name.’

The latest from the great Makoto Shinkai

With ‘Suzume,’ Shinkai returns to masterfully mix genre and fantasy, reflecting the everyday lives of the characters he portrays in his work, but also offering the viewer extraordinary situations far from the reality we are accustomed to in many moments of his work. One of the great filmmakers of Japan, following in the footsteps of other masters such as Hayao Miyazaki or Hideaki Anno.

In the review made in Meristation USA, it was pointed out that “Makoto Shinaki does it again. Suzume is a captivating movie that continues to surprise us while maintaining the formula we know from Your Name and Weathering With You. The mixture of a coming-of-age story with themes of grief and trauma requires a very special world and creative storytelling to achieve the spectacular story that is presented. Combine this with a magical soundtrack and you have a movie that will stay with us for years to come.”
