Malcolm in the Middle revival will recast Dewey, and the reason behind it has been confirmed

Bryan Cranston reveals the reason behind Erik Per Sullivan’s absence in the expected return of Malcolm in the Middle.

Update:

Since the return of Malcolm in the Middle was announced at the end of last year, we had doubts about whether all the original cast would be back. Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek were the first to appear, and over time the list of actors has grown, leaving in doubt the return of Erik Per Sullivan, who gave life to little Dewey. Unfortunately, the actor will not be back for this return.

According to a recent interview on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Bryan Cranston revealed that Erik Per Sullivan will not be back, but there’s a good reason for this.

“He’s actually going to Harvard”

“I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back,’” Cranston explained. “He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ And I go, ‘Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic.’ He’s actually going to Harvard. He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now. He said, ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something. So I’m not into it.”

After the end of the series, Erik Per Sullivan left acting at the age of 19 to pursue other interests, which led him to education. For the time being, the role of Dewey will be reprised with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over the role.

Production on the new four episodes of the series wrapped up last month, although the release date has yet to be announced. The official logline has been released, which gives us a little more information about what we can expect from this return. “Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”
