‘Man of Tomorrow’ first details revealed by James Gunn: “it’s more complicated”
James Gunn confirms unexpected Superman and Lex Luthor Team-up for next film.

The upcoming Superman movie, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ was revealed last week and, with it, created a lot of speculation about its plot. This week, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and director of the recently released Superman, has shared the first official details about the film.
During an appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show, Gunn revealed that the movie won’t be a conventional Superman sequel. Instead, it will feature an unprecedented team-up between Superman and his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor.
According to Gunn, the film is “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” focusing on the two characters being forced to work together against a “bigger threat.” “It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together, to a certain degree, against a much, much bigger threat. And it’s more complicated than that. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex Luthor, sadly.”
Who would be the next villain?
While Gunn did not explicitly name the new villain, fan speculation points toward Brainiac. This formidable foe, known for his vast intellect and planet-collecting tendencies, would be a perfect match to challenge both Superman’s strength and Luthor’s genius, forcing them to put aside their differences. Other popular theories include a return of Darkseid or General Zod.
“That’s the center of Lex for me,” Gunn added. “Three years ago, before Superman came along, he was considered the greatest guy in the world, even with other metahumans and superheroes in the world. And then in one fell swoop, this guy comes in wearing a silly costume, with dimples, and a charming smile, and a great chin, and he’s forgotten.”
Shooting for ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is scheduled to begin in April 2026, with a planned release date of July 9, 2027. Before we watch David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult as Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively, we have a date with another Kryptonian, with ‘Supergirl’ arriving to cinemas on June 26, 2026.
