Manga under review in the US for alleged links to school violence

‘Assassination Classroom’ is back in the spotlight following complaints from high school parents.

Assassination Classroom

That the United States has a problem with the use of guns comes as no surprise. There has been a spate of school and university shootings in recent years, but certain American groups seem to want to blame everything but the guns themselves: now the culprit is a manga, specifically ‘Assassination Classroom’.

Created by Yusei Matsui and published in North America in 2016, this manga is now in the eye of the storm. It is a comedy-sci-fi story in which a group of students team up to kill their teacher, who is actually an alien planning to destroy our planet. However, after being discovered in the Horry County school library (South Carolina), there are a number of people who have found it neither innocent nor funny.

‘Assassination Classroom’ sparks controversy as part of school libraries

It was a mother, Jennifer Hannigan, who started a campaign that has gone viral in the state after discovering that ‘Assassination Classroom’ was part of Horry County school libraries. “In the book, they’ll have several chapters that are telling you...a killing is in the title, of some nature,” she said. “There’s also several pages where there’s handguns, rifles, knives, and potions, and it talks about killing in the pages. They’re talking about the operative on how they’re going to kill this teacher, and different ways to kill the teacher.”

“Even if I didn’t have children, I wouldn’t want a child to read this book”, continúa. “There’s girls in lingerie hopping on top of men, pictures of guns, knives, and discussions about killing”.

This is not the first time ‘Assassination Classroom’ has been the victim of a censorship campaign, as in 2023 it was also removed from libraries in the states of Florida and Wisconsin due to its ‘depiction of gun violence and violence against teachers’.
