Marjane Satrapi, author of ‘Persepolis,’ one of the greatest graphic novels of all time, has died

Marjane Satrapi, creator of ‘Persepolis’ and a leading figure in contemporary comics, whose work turned her life in Iran into a cultural and political landmark, has died.

Update:

The French press has just announced the death of Marjane Satrapi, a Franco-Iranian filmmaker and author best known for the graphic novel ‘Persepolis.’ According to a statement released in France, Satrapi died “of sadness” at age 56, as it had been only a year since her husband passed away.

Who was Marjane Satrapi?

Marjane Satrapi, born in Iran in 1969, was a director and writer with dual French and Iranian citizenship. She grew up in a progressive family that initially supported the 1979 Revolution in Iran, until it began to take on Islamist overtones. From that point on, they became increasingly estranged from the regime as they suffered restrictions on freedom, repression, and the mandatory wearing of the veil. The war between her native country and Iraq was the catalyst for the new regime to take hold, after which her parents decided to send her to study at the French Lycée in Vienna.

Years later, it was the French author David B. (David Beauchard) who introduced her to the world of comics, and it was he who encouraged her to capture her experiences in Iran in the form of a graphic novel. Thus was born ‘Persepolis’—published in 2000—one of the most acclaimed works of the ninth art. In 2007, in collaboration with fellow French author and director Vincent Paronnaud, they created the animated adaptation, which was a major success, winning the Jury Prize at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. She also directed the films ‘The Voices’ and ‘Radioactive,’ the biography of Marie Curie.

Always highly critical of the situation in Iran, Satriapi was awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities in 2024.

What is ‘Persepolis’ about?

Throughout history, there have been comics that are remembered no matter how much time passes. ‘Persepolis’ is one of them, standing alongside legendary works such as ‘Maus,’ ‘Watchmen,’ ‘V for Vendetta,’ and ‘The Dark Knight Returns.’ It is an autobiographical work by Satrapi herself that focuses primarily on her childhood in Iran in the late 1970s, addressing topics such as the Revolution, the new regime, her adolescence in Austria, and her subsequent return to her homeland.

With its simple black-and-white style and powerful expressiveness, ‘Persepolis’ is a work of political and social criticism, though it is not without a certain biting humor and melancholy.
