Mars can be seen, but it can also be heard: this is what the red planet sounds like

Images from the Curiosity rover have been accompanied by sounds captured by the Insight Lander, including samples of the wind.

Have you ever wondered what Mars really sounds like? Is it like the sound of Earth? Without the songs of birds, the rustling of trees, the roar of the waves, the strides of animals and the incessant chatter of humans, the sonorous colors of the red planet must be forcibly different. Of course, there are places on our planet that escape the influence of living beings: barren areas, at the mercy of the wind and the wildest nature.

Since NASA’s Curiosity rover successfully landed on the planet in 2012, the small rover that tirelessly scours the surface of Mars has been sending valuable footage back to Earth. In 2018, the rover continued to send back images and video, but the Insight Lander managed to capture the sound of Mars.

What does the wind on Mars sound like?

If you close your eyes, put on your headphones, and click on the videos below, you will be transported to our neighboring planet for a few moments. You will hear the murmur of the wind and you will probably think that you are not too far away from Earth, because the Martian wind sounds very similar to ours, at least in appearance. The second video, dated December 2018, also lets the sounds of wind and other noises flow from the desert neighbor.

In December 2022, the Maven spacecraft discovered a bizarre cosmic phenomenon: the Martian solar wind had almost completely disappeared, causing the atmosphere to temporarily expand. NASA called this an extremely rare event.

The term solar wind should not be confused with the term solar storm. Storms are phenomena that can cause problems on Earth, as they are capable of causing radio wave and satellite interference, as well as power outages.
