Marvel cancels Disney+’s ‘Wonder Man’ despite previously renewing the series for season 2
Marvel has reportedly closed the writers’ room before it opened, though the character could still appear in future MCU projects.
‘Wonder Man,’ the Disney+ series set in the MCU, has been canceled, even though it had already been renewed for a second season.
According to Variety, Marvel has decided not to move forward with the series it had greenlit in March of this year. Sources also indicate that “a writers’ room for Season 2 was never opened, and the show’s writers have been released to pursue other projects.” However, the series’ characters may appear in future Marvel projects.
A meta-narrative take on the Marvel universe
‘Wonder Man’ had a rather unusual production process, as it strayed significantly from the usual formula of MCU series. ‘Wonder Man’ tells the story of Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), an actor who barely scrapes by in Hollywood with small roles in TV shows—roles he usually loses because of his perfectionism. One day, he happens to meet veteran actor Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), who in the past played the terrorist Mandarin—as seen in ‘Iron Man 3’ (2013)—and was later abducted by the criminal organization known as the Ten Rings—a plot point featured in ‘Shang -Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ (2021). Both audition for roles in the remake of ‘Wonder Man,’ a classic superhero movie.
However, what seems like the beginning of a beautiful friendship soon turns into something darker: Slattery has been recruited by the Damage Control Department to gather evidence against Williams, who actually has superpowers and is considered “a serious threat”—a revelation that comes at the end of the first episode and sets up the series’ central conflict.
The series debuted to widespread critical acclaim, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And although Disney never released the series’ viewership data, it managed to reach the No. 8 spot on the top 10 list of streaming originals for the week of January 26 through February 1.
