In the board game world, there are quite a few Marvel games, some good ones too! And one of the best is certainly Marvel Dice Throne: a fast-paced, dice-rolling game where players take the role of a Marvel superhero and try to defeat one another in a duel. Each hero has its unique set of components and abilities, and the game has a few ways to play, which gives it a high replayability value.

This is a perfected and themed version of the very popular Dice Throne board game, which had two versions prior to this Marvel one, with some expansions as well. Something that’s quite easy to do with this version as well, that has already some of its own, because each character can be a separate add-on easily.

So, what is Marvel Dice Throne?

Marvel Dice Throne is a 2-6 player dueling game based on the roll of the dice, and balanced with cards and upgrades to add strategy and keep luck to a lesser role. It can be played as a 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 2v2v2 or free-for-all, but you need at least one expansion to be able to play with more than 4 players.

Each player starts with its own hero board, components, a deck of cards, and a unique dice set. The goal is to fight your way to win by reducing your opponent’s health to zero by upgrading your hero’s abilities and playing cards, thus aiding your dice rolls to be able to use your superpowers.

Each turn consists of several phases:

  1. Upkeep Phase: Resolve status effects and certain abilities.
  2. Income Phase: Gain 1 Combat Point and draw 1 card.
  3. Main Phase 1: Play a card, upgrade abilities, and use certain abilities.
  4. Offensive Roll Phase: Fight! Roll 5 dice up to three times to achieve the best combination of your abilities (you can reroll whichever dice you want).
  5. Targeting Roll Phase: Select your target if playing a multiplayer game.
  6. Defensive Roll Phase: Your opponent rolls their defensive dice to mitigate the damage or counterattack.
  7. Main Phase 2: Choose to play or sell cards for CP, set up your strategy for the next turn.
  8. Discard Phase: Discard any cards if you have more than 6 in hand.

Then, your opponent(s) do the same and so on. To win, you must manage your CP wisely, choosing the best upgrades and cards to play to fit your strategy against each specific opponent. Each hero has unique abilities and components, making every match potentially very different from the last one.

Looking good!

Marvel Dice Throne’s production quality is top-notch, with great artwork and design, not only in the visual side of things, but also in how the game is presented to the user. It features great artwork and print quality, which captures the essence of each hero.

The components are high-quality, and the way it is organized is very well thought out. The box includes custom trays for each character, making it very easy to just grab a little package and unpack everything you need for your hero. This also includes thick hero boards, unique dice sets for each character, and components such as a hammer for Thor or webs for Spider-Man.

This attentive approach really enhances the overall experience, and makes not only the setup, but also the storage very easy, contributing as well to the game’s replayability value.

Okay, you rock with Miles Morales, but who else is there?

Looking to add some power? There are a few expansions you can try! The base game includes Scarlett Witch, Loki, Thor, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and each one plays very differently. For example, Thor is almost raw power, while Spider-Man focuses more on surviving, counterattacking, and making combos.

And to add to the variation of things, there’s an expansion featuring Black Widow and Dr. Strange, another one with Captain Marvel and Black Panther, two more that have a total of eight X-Men, and also one with Deadpool all alone. The bad news is that as of writing this article, there doesn’t seem to be any more coming soon, but we have quite some heroes to play with anyhow.

The game is also nice in the way it tells you how complex each hero is, so that you know which ones will be easier to start playing with before exploring the more robust and potentially powerful ones.

In short, Marvel Dice Throne is a thrilling dice-rolling board game with a high replayability value thanks to its various heroes, each being played very differently, and also its multiple game modes and the fact that starting and storing it feels like a breeze. We cannot recommend it enough, and the best part is that it’s got a few expansions! Are you ready to roll some dice and dive into the action with your friends and family?
