Marvel Studios’s Kevin Feige talks about a possible return for Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans
The president of Marvel Studios is teasing the idea of the return of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans as their respective characters after the success of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine revival.
‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ premieres around the world on Thursday, July 25, and Kevin Feige, the president and creative director at Marvel Studios, is delighted that Hugh Jackman has returned as Wolverine. But now, it appears as though the executive considers it possible that Robert Downey Jr. could be back in future movies as Iron Man alongside Chris Evans doing the same as Captain America, but with a very clear condition: It must be done with great care and respect towards the legacy of the characters.
In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Kevin Feige spoke at length about the potential return of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Evans as Captain America. According to the Marvel Studios creative, The fact that Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ has been handled so well is the crucial point so that similar returns with Downey Jr. and Evans can take place.
“That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine. So, what’s to come? We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [Deadpool & Wolverine] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken”, stated Feige.
The future of the MCU is ever-changing
The return of Jackman as the most recognizable character of his entire film career has taken place thanks to the concept of the multiverse introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Disney+ series ‘Loki’. Feige alludes to the emotional ending of ‘Logan’ (2017) where the character sacrifices himself for the greater good, and how those events are not being invalidated with the return of the hero in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’.
This, in turn, opens the door to the potential return of other beloved figures from the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Captain America and Iron Man. Both left the MCU in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) in different ways: Tony Stark made the ultimate sacrifice with the Infinity Gauntlet to make Thanos disappear, and Steve Rogers stayed in the past so he could grow old with Peggy Carter and be able to have a well-deserved retirement with her after going through countless hardships.
If Iron Man and Captain America return to Marvel, they could be variants from other universes with different backgrounds and even motivations., this is a very effective way to make characters come back without removing any value to the conclusions of the story arcs of the “genuine” versions of the characters.
Although at this time there are no fixed plans regarding the return of these two actors, at least there are already conversations about this possibility by important people within Marvel Studios like Kevin Feige.
