Masahiro Sakurai ends his YouTube channel by revealing he’s working on a new game

One of the most prominent figures in the video game industry is Masahiro Sakurai, director and creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, but also the mind behind Kirby and many other titles and franchises at Nintendo. The creator has been sharing all of his wisdom with us through his YouTube channel, from which he now says goodbye but not before announcing that he has actually been directing a new game since 2022.

“I received a request to write a game proposal, which I finished at lightning speed,” revealed Sakurai. “I’m sorry I can’t share more about this project, but assuming we’re able to get it made, it should be announced sooner or later.”

“Up to this point, I had always gone directly from one job to the next. Directors tend to stay involved in projects longer than anyone else. As one job approaches the finish line, you’ll often be getting ready for the next one, so you never get to rest. Yet after all these years, by some miracle… my schedule was wide open for several months straight! My next job was decided and I was done getting ready for it, but the team hadn’t been assembled yet, leading to this longer-than-usual gap.”

What’s next in Masahiro Sakurai’s career? A new and mysterious project on which he is now completely focused. A new Super Smash Bros. is one of the possibilities, but it will not be easy to overcome everything that the latest installment of the saga has put on the table. Revisiting notable franchises in his career such as Kirby or Kid Icarus, a legendary license that he brought back to Nintendo 3DS with the excellent Kid Icarus: Uprising, or perhaps something completely new... Time will give answers about Masahiro Sakurai’s future game, but his legacy and all the knowledge published over the years will remain valid for a long time on his YouTube channel.
