Meet the tiny yet savage creature that Marvel’s Wolverine takes his name from
Wolverines are known for their metal claws, nasty attitude, and yellow/blue outfits… or at least the Marvel mutant is. Here’s where he takes the name from.
‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ hits theaters this week, and the expectation for the return of Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine is enormous. What exactly is a Wolverine? There are many people who have asked themselves this question over the years, as the creature is not known enough around the world, and even worse, the character gets different names depending on the region, which changes the meaning of the character to all sorts of things… from “Lobezno” (Wolf Pup) all the way to the graciously retired “Aguja Dinámica” (The Dynamic Needle).
Known as Wolverine, the character created by Len Wein and John Victor Romita, first appeared in issue 180 of ‘The Incredible Hulk’, which went on sale in October 1974. Decade after decade, the character continued to gain relevance until becoming one of the greatest Marvel figures.
What exactly is wolverine? The animal that inspired Marvel’s Wolverine is a carnivorous mammal that looks cute, but is actually tremendously ferocious, which lives in greater numbers in the north of Canada, the American state of Alaska, the Nordic countries, and all of western Russia.
Wolverine and his unexpected animal origin
What does The Wolverine and wolverines have in common? The similarities of the Marvel character with his animal inspiration are notable. The animal stands out for its ferocity, sharp claws, impressive strength, and solitary personality because they prefer to be alone and do not usually move in groups, remaining next to their mothers only until they are ten weeks old. Due to the uninhabited areas of the world in which they reside, just one of them can occupy a territory of hundreds of square kilometers.
The wolverine has the capacity to take down prey much larger than itself, and they remain in constant movement throughout the day and night in search of food. The wolverine is currently considered to be in danger of extinction in some parts of the world, such as Europe, where it is rare in the Scandinavian Peninsula.
Friday, July 25 is a date marked for months on the calendar by Marvel fans around the world. ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ will premiere in cinemas and will mean the return of Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine since ‘Logan’, the film released in 2017 and seemed to put an end to his relationship with the most emblematic character of his entire acting career.
