Microsoft’s warning if you continue to use Windows 10 today: “We see cyberattacks increasing in both volume and complexity”

The company defends the need to upgrade to Windows 11.

Update:

Microsoft has decided to end updates for Windows 10, an operating system that remains on millions of devices worldwide. The Redmond-based company has been inundated with criticism, but none of it has been enough to change the American giant’s mind. In fact, just one day after updates were discontinued, the company released a statement encouraging consumers to update their hardware and operating systems.

Microsoft has emphasized its commitment to sustainability and its 2030 goals: to be carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste. “This includes designing our devices for optimal repair, reuse, and recovery,” he said.

However, in the second part of the argument, they justify saying goodbye to Windows 10 on security grounds: “At the same time, we see cyberattacks increasing in both volume and complexity across Europe.” According to Microsoft, 1 in 5 businesses in Europe experienced security breaches in 2024. “Outdated software creates opportunities for cybercriminals, raising the risk of intrusion, ransomware, and data loss.”

Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11

Microsoft’s recommendation is to upgrade to Windows 11: “Updating operating system and hardware requirements is essential to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated security threats. Windows 11 is the most secure version of Windows ever,“ which includes a ”62% drop in security incidents” and a significant reduction in attacks compared to Windows 10 (they estimate a threefold decrease).

A few days ago, a group of people protested outside Microsoft’s headquarters in Brussels. The Right to Repair Europe coalition has argued that Microsoft is rendering “perfectly functional computers” obsolete by its decision to stop updating Windows 10. Furthermore, many PCs cannot be updated because their processors are not compatible.
