Monster Hunter Wilds reveals more details and raises more questions at State of Play

The world of Monster Hunter just got a little larger today, as Capcom gave us another small glimpse at the news title in the series

After being revealed in December 2023, Capcom had been very silent about Monster Hunter Wilds, the next entry in the Monster Hunter series that appears to have pushed the franchise into a more open-world format when compared with previous games in the franchise. Now, during the most recent PlayStation State of Play, the studio revealed a new gameplay trailer showing off much more about the upcoming game. Take a look below.

While we still don’t have a release date other than a vague “2025″, the new trailer does reveal many new details about the next Monster Hunter title. It opens with a quick look at what seems to be the main ensemble of characters that’ll be present throughout the main story mode, all riding on a sand ship traveling through the world’s sea of dunes (similar to the ones we’ve explored in previous games like Monster Hunter 3 and 4). The heroes seem to be looking for a missing party of people, but soon enough the focus shifts to a hunter luring a huge monster away from their herd, and some quick action with a greatsword and a light bowgun.

Just like in the first trailer, a sandstorm suddenly surrounds the hunter, and we can see a variety of new monsters all interacting with each other, including at least two brand-new monsters that are making their debut in this game: a giant hideous baboon, and a brawny, tough frog-like creature that uses its tongue to attack.

20 years of Monster Hunter, and bigger than ever

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the Monster Hunter franchise, and Capcom has been celebrating throughout the year. After the release of Monster Hunter: World in 2018, the series saw renewed interest and an explosion in popularity throughout the entire world, which has allowed the company to take bigger risks when developing new titles. It’s success was so big that ever since, they’ve jumped into reviving Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and even Dragon’s Dogma with sequels, remakes, and rereleases.

We still don’t know when exactly in 2025 we’ll finally get to join the hunt in the Forbidden Lands of Monster Hunter Wilds, but when it happens, it’ll release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC through Steam.
