Rockstar Games

More than half a year after the announcement of GTA 6, what is known about Rockstar's new game?

Rockstar released the GTA 6 trailer in December and has since returned to total secrecy. But what have we learned about the game in these months?

Grand Theft Auto VI has been one of the most anticipated titles in over a decade. The Rockstar Games franchise has always been synonymous with excellence in open-world gameplay and storytelling, and fans have long been clamoring for a new installment. After several hiccups on the way to its official announcement, we got our first glimpse of it in early December 2023 to the beat of Tom Petty. And it was explosive.

Unlike other studios, Rockstar has once again maintained total secrecy, giving very few official details about what awaits us in this new installment. So here is a summary of everything that has been released in the last 6 months.

Its characters

Inspired by Bonnie & Clyde, GTA 6 will have two characters, Lucia and Jason, who seem to give us a dramatic love story full of shootouts and robberies. This will be the first installment in the series to feature a female protagonist. It is still too early to know if we will only be able to control her or if, like in the first game, we will be able to jump between characters and control Jason as well.

The first trailer focused on Lucia (played by and how her life of “bad luck” led her to prison. Although it is true that this is not the first time that we control a woman in a game of the series (since the first GTA we could choose 4 skins of women), this one has never had so much power or even a background as now. Did the studio wake up to put a Latina protagonist? Not at all, and even Michael de Santa himself, or rather his actor Ned Luke, came out to defend the character. Let’s not forget that when CJ from GTA San Andreas was announced, there were also “such” complaints.

Setting

As speculated, we are back in Vice City and beyond. We will not only travel through the fictional version of Miami, but also through a large part of its suburbs. As we could see in the trailer, the satire that Rockstar has always painted about American life cannot stand up to the multiple cases of “Florida Men” presented in the final part of the trailer. What’s more, the so-called “Florida Joker” came out to threaten the studio for using his likeness without his consent... Video games imitate life, or life imitates video games...

So we can expect to tour a Vice City in the current era on a map that will show us the most important and emblematic places of the state. Speaking of the map...

There’s a map… that is made by fans

The GTA map is always a good example of what we can expect from the game. The way it grows from release to release and the amount of detail and locations it manages to capture from the real world is always amazing. There is no official map at this time, and we may not get to see it officially until a few weeks before release. For now, a group of fans have started working again on what they hope will be the game’s map. Using parts of the trailer, leaks, and even a bit of common sense, they have begun to create a map of the state of Leonida, where this adventure will take place. You can see more of this map here.

Cover art

The cover of a Grand Theft Auto is an important part of the package. While the art style has changed over the years, the basic concept has not. These little vignettes give us a good look at the heroes and villains we’ll meet throughout the game, but for now, there’s nothing. A month ago, however, alarm bells went off for fans when link for new artwork were registered on Rockstar’s site, claiming to be the covers. However, these links led to addresses with no content. We will have to wait a little longer.

It’s price

Although you can expect to pay what a modern next-gen console game costs today ($70), there are those who believe that GTA VI should be priced higher. At least, that was the takeaway from a statement made by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. “We’re so focused on delivering more value than what we charge. And that’s sort of the rubric. And any time we establish a price, we want to make sure that it’s good news for the consumer; that the experience vastly over-delivers in the context of the cost. That’s the goal.” For now, there is no official price, nor collector’s editions, though given the studio’s recent releases, we know we can expect something.

It has a release… window

Finally, the question we’ve all been asking: “When will GTA VI arrive?” The answer is almost upon us, and according to Take Two themselves, the game will arrive in the fall 2025. This is a release window that Rockstar has favored and carried through almost every Grand Theft Auto series. The date still seems far away, but that means more time for more trailers and more information.
