Mortal Kombat 1 unveils its gameplay at Summer Game Fest 2023

NetherRealm Studios’ Ed Boon took the stage at Summer Game Fest to share the first gameplay of Mortal Kombat 1.

What was promised has been delivered. Mortal Kombat 1 was present during Summer Game Fest 2023 in a big way, sharing with fans a first glimpse of gameplay into this new entry to the legendary fighting game franchise.

Ed Boon took to the stage with Geoff Keighley to talk in-depth about how the Kameo Fighter systems will work during gameplay, showing off not only some classic looks for characters from the first game, but teasing a huge roster of them as well as playable characters for when the game finally launches in September 19, 2023 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.

Peacemaker and Homelander will be the first DLC for Mortal Kombat 1

As the gameplay will surely have aroused interest in more than one of you, let’s take the opportunity to remember that a few weeks ago Amazon Italy leaked all the characters that will come to Mortal Kombat 1 through the Kombat Pack, the first DLC for the game. It is worth rescuing said “filtration” because among future fighters there are such incredible additions as Peacemaker and Homelander, the characters from Suicide Squad and The Boys. But beware there are many more:

Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack Playable Characters

  • Ermac
  • Homelander (Patriot)
  • Omni Man
  • Peacemaker
  • Quan Chi
  • Takeda

Kameo Fighters of the Kombat Pack

  • Tremor
  • Johnny Cage
  • Chameleon
  • Mavado
  • Pour

What are the “Kameo Fighters” of Mortal Kombat 1?

If you are wondering why the list of fighters that will arrive via DLC is divided in two, the answer is very simple. Kameo fighters are not playable characters, but support characters. When summoned they make an appearance on the screen, launch an attack at the rival (each one will have several to choose from), and return the way they came.

It is a surprising change, but that is precisely what Mortal Kombat 1 is looking for, to surprise us. The game will be “a rebirth”, a reboot that resets and restarts the timeline and that comes hand in hand with “a new combat system and different modes and fatalities”.
