‘Mortal Kombat 2′ delights fans with new footage: Johnny Cage, Kitana and Shao Kahn join the battle
Hiroyuki Sanada, the ‘Shogun’ actor, also returns as Scorpion in this highly anticipated sequel.

The sequel to ‘Mortal Kombat’ (2021), titled ‘Mortal Kombat 2’, has once again shown signs of life with a series of new images, shared by Entertainment Weekly, confirming the arrival of new characters and the return of some icons of the popular video game saga. The movie, which will hit theaters and IMAX theaters on October 24, promises to take the action, drama and mythology of the universe created by Ed Boon and John Tobias to a new level. And it will feature big-name actors in major roles.
One of the most exciting announcements is the addition of Karl Urban (‘The Boys’) as Johnny Cage, the charismatic and flamboyant Hollywood wrestler who didn’t appear in the first film. According to Boon, Urban brings his own style to the character, balancing comedy and depth. “He’s a different Johnny Cage than in the video games, but with his own touch that brings freshness,” explained the franchise co-creator. Director Simon McQuoid added that the character serves as an entry point for audiences, offering “ridiculously hilarious” moments without falling into the overly comedic.

In addition to Johnny Cage, ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ introduces other very iconic characters:
- Adeline Rudolph (‘Resident Evil’) as Kitana, the warrior princess of Edenia and a fan-favorite fighter.
- Martyn Ford (‘House of David’) as Shao Kahn, the fearsome ruler of Outworld who seeks to conquer Earthrealm.

The cast also includes the return of several actors from the first installment, including Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade) and Tadanobu Asano (Raiden). Although some characters, such as Kano and Kung Lao, died in the first movie, the lore of ‘Mortal Kombat’ allows for their return through spirits and the NetherRealm.

The plot of this sequel will focus on the Mortal Kombat tournament, where Earthrealm and Outworld will face off in an epic battle. If Earthrealm loses its tenth consecutive tournament, Shao Kahn will invade and conquer Earth. According to Boon, this competition will feature surprising twists and turns that will keep audiences on edge throughout the film. McQuoid noted that the film will explore different realms, which will allow for a unique visual variety. In addition, the IMAX format will be used to offer a more immersive cinematic experience, with aspect ratio changes in certain scenes.
In short, ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ promises to be bigger, more intense and true to the franchise than its predecessor, with a stellar cast, new characters and a plot full of action, humor and unexpected plot twists. Fans can mark their calendars for October 24 to make sure they don’t miss this epic battle.
