Mortal Kombat 3 movie announced: Release plans, script details and MK2 delay explained

New Line and Warner Bros. are “so convinced” by the sequel that they fast-tracked a third film.

Update:

Mortal Kombat has gained momentum to continue proving that one of the most violent fighting games still has what it takes to keep fighting. This weekend, during New York Comic-Con, Warner Bros. held a panel on the movie to show what’s coming with Mortal Kombat 2, and the big surprise was the revelation that work is already underway on its sequel.

During the panel, screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that he is in the process of writing the script for the third film, mentioning that New Line and Warner Bros. “are so convinced” that they have given him the green light for the next installment. “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie,” said Slater, who penned Mortal Kombat II. “They are so excited, they are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it, they’ve already hired me to start writing the next installment.”

Mortal Kombat 2 is coming soon to theaters

But before we get excited about a third installment, we first have to see part 2. Mortal Kombat 2 was originally scheduled to arrive this month, on October 24, but was delayed several months until May 15, 2026. During the panel, Director Simon McQuoid addressed the date change at NYCC, mentioning that they were victims of their own success, and that led them to delay the film. “Every time people have seen this movie, it gained momentum,” McQuoid said. “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster. We should be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat as the movie and the franchise is just gonna kick off summer next year. Yes, we have to wait but it’s gonna feel massive. That’s the reason.”
