Naruto and How to Train Your Dragon achieve the most unexpected crossover, but there is a reason behind it
The worlds of Western animation and manga join forces.

This definitely wouldn’t have been on our list of crossovers we expected to see this year. The worlds of anime and Western animation have come together to present a very special piece of art combining Naruto and How to Train Your Dragon.
Universal Pictures Japan’s social media accounts featured a special illustration by Masashi Kishimoto, creator of Naruto. The collaboration shows a full-color drawing of Hiccup and Toothless alongside Naruto and Gamakichi flying through the skies in their own unique ways, while the protagonists of each work greet each other warmly.

This artwork celebrates the upcoming release of the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon in Japan. Along with the artwork, Kishimoto also commented on the film: “The animated How to Train Your Dragon was so entertaining, that among my fellow manga creators, it’s known as a highly polished masterpiece.” The manga creator continued, “Now it’s being made into a live-action version, and boy, is it entertaining! Riding on the back of a live-action dragon feels many times better! You can fly!” A clean version of this art can be found in the movie’s official site.
A highly acclaimed live-action film
How to Train Your Dragon debuted this summer with its live-action version on June 13 in the United States. It received good reviews, scoring 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and reaching a 97% rating among fans on the platform. How will this film fare in Japan? We will have to wait until September 5, when it premieres in that country, to find out.
