Nathan Fillion has no regrets about his Superman hairdo: “If you see a guy with a bowl cut, that guy clearly doesn’t give a damn”
The Green Lantern actor says Guy Gardner’s haircut is canon, and he was “team bowl cut the whole way”.

Nathan Fillion is no stranger to divisive roles, but his turn as Guy Gardner, the brash Green Lantern in James Gunn’s 'Superman’, has fans talking for one very specific reason: the bowl cut. The severe, strawberry-blonde mop has drawn criticism online, but Fillion isn’t backing down.
“Team bowl cut the whole way”
In interviews with CNN and other outlets, Fillion made it clear that the hairstyle wasn’t just a creative choice, it was a deliberate nod to the comics.
“I don’t think you can do a Guy Gardner without doing the hair. I think it would be a disservice,” he said.
“If you see a guy walking down the street with a bowl cut, that guy clearly doesn’t give a damn what you think about him. And that’s Guy Gardner.”
Fillion added that while other styles were considered, he pushed for the bowl cut from the beginning, calling it “integral to the character.”
Fan reactions: love it or hate it
Social media has been split. Some fans called the look “ridiculous” and “distracting,” while others praised its comic accuracy:
- “Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern looks terrible in the exact way he should. Comic accurate.”
- “It’s Guy Gardner. He’s supposed to have a bad haircut.”
Even Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) gets in a jab during the film, offering one of the few in-universe acknowledgments of the style.
In a rebooted DC Universe where authenticity and tone are under scrutiny, Fillion’s commitment to Gardner’s comic roots reflects James Gunn’s broader strategy: embrace the weird, stay true to the source, and let the characters speak for themselves—even if their hair does most of the talking.
