Neither death nor dismemberment, this is the most difficult scene to shoot in ‘Starship Troopers’

‘Starship Troopers’ will return to the big screen by one of the contemporary masters of the genre.

Paul Verhoeven’s return to science fiction should have been big news in 1997, when ‘Starship Troopers’ was released. A filmography that includes ‘Robocop’ and ‘Total Recall’ led to predict that this film by the Dutch-born director would be a new success, but nothing could have been further from the truth. In fact, if it weren’t for the second life that movies had in the videoclub era, it would have been a complete ruin. Even more so, considering that the shooting was tremendously eventful...

Filming in the desert caused many cast and crew members to have a hard time, but there were also accidents. Casper Van Dien ended up with a broken rib after jumping off a model of one of the aliens, while Michael Ironside ended up unconscious after being kneed in the head. However, the scene that Verhoeven had the hardest time shooting was not an action scene, far from it.

Verhoeven had to make drastic decisions to shoot the shower scene. Men and women shared them indistinctly, without modesty, and all completely naked, something that did not convince the girls at all. They flatly refused, so the director, after multiple discussions and pleas, had to be one more, taking off his pants and showing himself as God brought him into the world. Not only him, but he also asked the technical crew to shoot that scene with everyone completely in the buff. Then, yes, with everyone on equal terms, the scene could go ahead.

A new ‘Starship Troopers’ in the hands of a Sci-Fi master

Just a few months ago it was confirmed that we can enjoy a new installment of ‘Starship Troopers’, which remains to be seen if it will be a remake of the film, or, on the contrary, a new version of the novel by Robert A. Heinlein. In charge will be Neill Blomkamp, who has already made a name for himself in the science fiction genre with ‘District 9′, ‘Chappie’ or ‘Elysium’.
