Neither Doctor Doom nor Professor X: this is Giancarlo Esposito’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The first image of Giancarlo Esposito on the set of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ may disappoint many fans as he appears to be playing a minor villain rather than another character of greater interest as expected.
This morning we got the first trailer for ‘Captain America Brave New World’, the fourth installment in the character’s saga and the first with Sam Wilson as the title character. It also gave us our first official look at Giancarlo Esposito making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. While it wasn’t the big role he or his fans were hoping for, here’s what you need to know about the villain he plays.
Revealed the villain to be played by Giancarlo Esposito in Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World′
Since last month, photos from the set of Captain America: Brave New World′ set have been posted on social media, where it has finally been possible to reveal one of the biggest unknowns of Marvel in recent times: ¿which character Giancarlo Esposito plays?. And the answer may not be too pleasant, as it seems to be Paladin, a character that is quite unknown and of little general interest in the vast Marvel Universe.
In the comics, Paladin is a mercenary and private investigator. He possesses slightly superhuman abilities, such as increased strength, speed, agility, and endurance. He is also an expert in hand-to-hand combat and has knowledge of boxing, judo, savate, and taekwondo. He first appeared in ‘Daredevil #150′ (1978).
As we commented in the first paragraph of the news, this clashes with the actor’s previous wishes to be someone of great importance in the MCU as Professor X, and also had many votes to become the evil monarch of Latveria, Doctor Doom, in the next ‘Fantastic 4′ movie. Well, in the end it was neither; Esposito will be the mercenary Paladin.
However, given Paladin’s ties to Daredevil as one of his villains and the reformed villain/anti-hero group Thunderbolts, there’s a chance we could see Giancarlo Esposito again in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and the upcoming ‘Thunderbolts*’ movie. There is also talk of his appearance in a possible ‘Heroes for Hire’ series, which could mark the debut of other characters from Netflix shows in the MCU, such as Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage.
Barring any further production delays or issues, ‘Captain America Brave New World′ is expected to be released worldwide on February 14, 2025.
