Neither Sonic nor Tails: Paramount announces a new movie from the blue hedgehog universe for 2028
The Blue Blur’s universe is accelerating fast as Paramount sets its most ambitious Sonic project yet.
Paramount Pictures is officially doubling down on the Blue Blur. Following the record-breaking performance of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the studio has added a massive new project to its release calendar: a “Sonic Universe Event Film” scheduled to premiere on December 22, 2028.
According to Variety, this mysterious title is slated to arrive just over a year and a half after Sonic the Hedgehog 4, signaling that Paramount is moving toward an expanded cinematic universe. While the studio has not yet confirmed the film’s specific focus, industry insiders and fans alike are connecting the dots, and all signs point to one name: Shadow the Hedgehog.
The leading theory: A Shadow-centric blockbuster
Is this the Shadow spin-off we’ve been waiting for? It certainly looks that way. The “Event Film” designation suggests a project with significant scale, distinct from the mainline numbered sequels.
Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves, was the breakout star of Sonic 3, driving the film to gross over $420 million worldwide and becoming the highest-earning entry in the franchise. His narrative arc in the third film—acting as a tragic antagonist before a climactic sacrifice—left audiences clamoring for more. As fans know, the film’s final post-credits scene revealed Shadow survived his fall from space, reclaiming his inhibitor rings and setting the stage for a redemption arc.
With Sonic 4 confirmed with a release date on March 19, 2027, and to focus on new threats like Metal Sonic, Shadow’s absence from that immediate sequel makes a 2028 standalone film the perfect vehicle to continue his story. This “Event Film” could finally introduce Team Dark, bringing fan-favorites Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega into the fold to give Shadow the new family he deserves.
