Neither the critics nor the new Cap: Why ‘Captain America 4′ was a box office flop

We compare the box office performance of the new MCU film starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford to other Marvel Studios films.

Capitán América: Brave New World

While reviews for ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ has received mixed reviews, the latest Marvel Studios film is not performing as well as expected at the box office. So much so that the movie, starring Anthony Mackie, now as the new Captain America, and Harrison Ford in the role of President Ross, who turns into the Red Hulk, has grossed about $289 million against a budget of about $180 million. A figure that is still somewhat fair to be considered a solvent production and still below other MCU films considered commercial failures.

Why ‘Captain America’ box office is so low

For example, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ received a disappointing 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, although the general public gave the film a much higher 80%, which is based more on the opinions of fans than critics. In addition, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ can almost be considered a reboot of Cap’s adventures in the MCU, as it is the first to feature Sam Wilson as the new Captain America after receiving the shield from his good friend Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers Endgame’.

Another reason is that ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ does not quite reach the status of an event movie like ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ or, more recently, ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, both of which grossed well over $1 billion. Still, the new Captain America movie has already exceeded its budget by just over $100 million, despite suffering one of the company’s steepest drops in its second week.

Only two other MCU films have suffered a steeper drop in their second week, with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania’ at 69% and ‘The Marvels’ at 78%. With all of these numbers in mind, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will likely end its theatrical run with a worldwide gross of between $300 million and $400 million, putting it ahead of other much bigger flops in the MCU.
