Update:

Fans of Sam Fisher rejoice: the Netflix animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch has been officially greenlit for a second season. Creator and showrunner Derek Kolstad, the writer behind the John Wick franchise, exclusively revealed the news during the IGN Fan Fest: Fall Edition live stream on Wednesday.

“We’ve got a Season Two coming your way,” Kolstad announced. “We don’t [have a release date yet]. And being new to animation, I know how long it takes. But we are fully into preproduction and everyone is super excited about where we go next.”

A hybrid approach to storytelling

Season 1 of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch concluded with a definitive ending for several key characters, but Kolstad views this as an opportunity, not a constraint, for the next outing. The showrunner explained that the creative team will employ a “hybrid approach” to resolve the first season’s fallout, setting the stage for a compelling new narrative.

“What I love about those kinds of endings are when you return to it, usually we see one of three ways. One, you address it right away, two, you ignore it, or three, it’s a hybrid approach, and here it’s a hybrid approach,” said Kolstad. “And what I think you can see in Season Two is a larger-scale story, but [with the same] intimacy of character and the intimacy of action.”

Season Two is envisioned as offering a “larger-scale story,” expanding the scope of the conspiracy and the missions Sam Fisher will undertake. However, Kolstad emphasized that this growth in scale will not come at the expense of the intense character work and combat fans enjoyed in the first season. Players can expect the same focus on the “intimacy of character and the intimacy of action,” maintaining the high-stakes, close-quarters tension familiar to the series.

Finally, in a nod to the fans’ concerns given his past work on John Wick, Kolstad explicitly addressed the fate of Sam Fisher’s canine companion, Kaiju the dog. His promise to the audience was direct and reassuring: “All I’ll say about Kaiju is he will be safe forever,” ensuring that at least one good boy will make it through the inevitable chaos of Season Two.
