Netflix is returning to Night City with a new Cyberpunk animated project
The neon signs of Night City still have many stories to tell, and Netflix is joining forces with CDPR again to bring us a new animated project in the world of Cyberpunk.
In the context of Netflix’s Geeked Week, an announcement has been made that, despite its lack of details and specificity, has been a real joy for those of us who enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 and the anime that emerged from it: Edgerunners. CD Projekt joins forces with Netflix again to create a new animated production set on the streets of Night City. At the moment we only have an announcement in the form of a teaser, with hardly any clues given, although that does not prevent us from drawing some conclusions, or at least developing some theories, particularly about whether we are talking about a sequel to Edgerunners.
Will it be a sequel to Edgerunners?
For a start, the teaser points to Netflix Animation as the studio behind its development, which at first glance would rule out the return of Studio Trigger, who created the first anime that emerged from the collaboration. Those responsible for it have already stated that there were no plans for a continuation and that, if it did, it would be something completely different. All in all, even without the presence of the Kill la Kill studio, Netflix Animation has the potential to do something equally impressive, given the works it has released in recent times such as Terminator Zero and Blue Eye Samurai.
On the other hand, what we should really ask ourselves is if there is a need for an Edgerunners sequel. Almost all of us who have seen the finale can agree that it was a very personal and emotional journey heavily focused around its charismatic characters and, perhaps, we could also agree that that journey should not be touched much more to preserve what it was. In any case, the announcement makes no mention of whether we are talking about some type of continuation, but if Night City has something, it is stories to tell and characters to star in them. We will be waiting.
