Netflix has a new global hit. It’s the film ‘180,’ a South African thriller which, in just a few days, has become the undisputed new No. 1 worldwide, in a total of 57 countries. So much so that ’180′ has become a full-fledged phenomenon, establishing itself as the favorite choice of millions of Netflix subscribers worldwide.
A raw account of violence and its consequences
Thus, the film written and directed by Alex Yazbek and starring Prince Grootboom, Noxolo Dlamini, and Danica De La Rey has become Netflix’s latest global hit, experiencing a spectacular rise in viewership and surpassing the platform’s previous hit: the shark movie ‘Thrash’. “When an unexpected road rage incident puts his son in critical condition, an enraged father spirals down a dark path of emotional turmoil and vengeance,” reads the official synopsis.
A revenge story about violence and its terrible consequences that, while it has become the must-watch movie of the moment on streaming platforms, has failed to fully win over critics; hence its current modest 4.6 rating on IMDb. ’180′ introduces us to Zak, a father who tries to instill positive values in his son amid a social climate dominated by corruption and abuse of power.
However, everything goes awry when Mandla, Zak’s son, dies in the midst of a violent altercation following a traffic accident. The situation escalates to the point where Zak, completely consumed by grief and rage, spirals into a quest for revenge whose consequences will be irreversible.
