Netflix’s One Piece is getting renewed for a second season

The author of the One Piece manga revealed that Netflix is going through with a new season, although it seems like they’ll have to wait a bit to have all of the scripts done.

We can stop speculating now: One Piece has triumphed on Netflix and avoided the curse of live-action adaptations of anime and manga. There was a lot of uncertainty about the future of the series, but the platform has not taken too long to give the green light to new episodes. Through social networks, the company has announced that it will develop a second season, with no confirmed premiere date yet.

“What did you think of Season 1 of One Piece’” asks Eiichiro Oda—author of the manga—in the video that accompanies the tweet. “I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios. It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it. To everyone who’s been a fan of One Piece for years, and to those who experienced One Piece for the first time, Thank you so much. Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news… Netflix has decided to renew the show! The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action straw hats will continue onward!” Oda-San stressed that it will take a while to have all of the scripts ready, and asked the fans to have patience.

How many seasons will Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ have?

Just before the series renewal was announced, producer Becky Clements declared in an interview with Deadline that they had planned to do multiple seasons. “I think even if we did six seasons, we would probably only use up half of the chapters of the manga,” she explained, later adding that they are already discussing what they would do from 3 to 6.

“The one thing I would say, we’re all unified in the parts of the manga that you just absolutely cannot eliminate, and that’s our guiding principle, the stories that we know and the characters that we know are important to the fans.”

Producer Marty Adelstein is even more optimistic: “We have hopes for 12 seasons, there’s so much material.” The truth is that both the manga and anime are some of the longest running and are still ongoing. Last year it celebrated its 25th anniversary, although its end is on the horizon, or at least that’s what Eiichiro Oda said in 2022. The goal of completing it in 2025 has been set, although he also clarified that " things never go the way you want.”
