New Dune Awakening gameplay conveys the ferocity of the war for spice

Dune Awakening aims to appeal to all fans of Frank Hubert’s mythical work. The popularity of the last two films has brought the brand back into the limelight. Its new gameplay at the Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2024 raises the expectations of the fans: the MMO being prepared by Funcom is coming on strong.

The War for Spice Takes Shape in Dune Awakening

Dune Awakening is preparing an MMO experience that seeks to introduce players to a persistent planet in constant change and confrontation between the factions that inhabit the sea of dunes. It still has no release date, but we already know the platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

As part of the Summer Game Fest 2024, we at MeriStation were able to attend a closed-door session where we got an in-depth look at what the studio is aiming for. The presentation featured the famous desert worms, these giant creatures that eat everything in their path when they detect the slightest sound in the sand.

“The first time you furrow the sand of the desert, it is etched with fire. Visually, it is quite powerful for a game that moves an online system with so many players,” wrote our colleagues from Spain in their impressions. “It is ‘Dune’ as imagined in Frank Herbert’s book. Temperature control is critical. Even if we have our hydration suit, spending long periods in the sun can bring us more than one problem”.

It’s clear that the level of ambition is high. Everything they have shown so far looks very promising.
