New Indiana Jones game from the creators of the latest Wolfenstein titles will be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem
Initially its agreement with Disney was aimed at multiple platforms.
The FTC lawsuit against Microsoft has left us with a new piece of information: the next Indiana Jones game will be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. Pete Hines, Bethesda’s head of global publishing, has confirmed the news, but not before sharing that the collaboration with Disney was different at first.
Before Zenimax Media was acquired by Microsoft, the company signed a deal with Disney (under its Lucasfilm Games label) to publish the game on “multiple platforms”. However, when Redmond took the reins, they reevaluated the collaboration so that it would ultimately be released exclusively for their current platforms: Xbox Series X|S and PC.
This comes as no surprise. Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, assured when the purchase was confirmed that the platforms on which Bethesda games would appear would be decided on a “case-by-case” basis. They respected existing agreements, such as the temporary exclusivity of Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo on the PS5, but from that point on, all games released excluded the PlayStation console, such as Hi-Fi Rush and Redfall. On the other hand, The Elder Scrolls Online expansions continue to be supported beyond the Xbox ecosystem.
What do we know about Machine Games’ Indiana Jones?
We have to go back to January 2021 to learn about the surprising announcement prepared by Bethesda. Machine Games, responsible for Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, embarked on an adventure to bring the most famous whip from the big screen to the video game.
“A new Indiana Jones game with an original story is in development from our studio, Machine Games, and will be executive produced by Todd Howard, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games,” they explained in a short tweet. “It’ll be some time before we have more to reveal, but we’re very excited to share today’s news.” They were right: two and a half years later, we are still stuck with that tiny teaser and the promise of an unreleased story in the Indiana Jones universe.
