New ‘Street Fighter’ live-action movie already has its Chun-Li and fans are pleased

Actress Callina Liang, who worked with Soderbergh on Presence, has been cast.

Update:

Legendary Pictures is moving forward with its ambitious new Street Fighter movie project and has taken a major step by selecting the actress to play one of the franchise’s most iconic roles: Chun-Li. According to an exclusive report by Deadline, 25-year-old Canadian actress Callina Liang will bring to life the “strongest woman in the world”—a legendary character in video game history.

Liang’s career has rapidly gained momentum, especially after starring in the international paranormal thriller Presence, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film earned strong critical praise:

“A finale worthy of the best of M. Night Shyamalan caps off 90 minutes of solid filmmaking—a minimalist in form, but excellent in execution,” we wrote in our review.

The actress also had a breakout year in 2024 thanks to her leading role in Bad Genius, a film adaptation of the highly praised Thai series of the same name by J.C. Lee. In a Vogue interview that same year, Liang declared she wanted to “ride horses, fire guns, and kick ass.” And clearly, she meant it.

Liang joins a cast already filled with big names, including Jason Momoa, wrestling superstar Roman Reigns, and others like Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, and Orville Peck. Directing the project is Kitao Sakurai, known for Twisted Metal, The Eric Andre Show, and Aardvark, and no stranger to adapting video game-inspired content.
