Next Metro game will be ‘even darker’ after Ukraine invasion: war has changed the saga
4A Games talks about its experience developing videogames in the midst of one of the biggest war conflicts of the last decade.

The next title in the acclaimed Metro saga, developed by 4A Games, promises to be “even darker” than its predecessors, influenced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In a recent blog post commemorating 15 years of the franchise, the studio revealed how the war conflict has transformed the narrative and tone of the studio’s new game, reflecting the lived experiences of its developers, many of whom reside in Ukraine.
In the blog in question, 4A Games explained:
“In 2022 a full-scale russian invasion changed how we wanted to tell the story of the next Metro game. As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story, those themes already present in Metro becoming ever-more apparent and important. As conflict, the struggle for power, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom have become part of our lives over the past 3+ years, we are still living and working during this wartime, and that inevitably shapes the games we make.”
Dmitry Glukhovsky is still working on Metro despite his conviction
The studio also highlighted the collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky, creator of the original literary saga and a staunch opponent of the war in Ukraine. The author, who has been sentenced to prison ‘in absentia’ by the Russian authorities, continues to work side by side with 4A Games to shape this new chapter in the franchise. “We are proud to have him as a friend and co-creator as we tell this new and relevant chapter of Metro together,” the team expressed.
With war as a backdrop, the next Metro not only promises to be a darker experience, but also a powerful reflection on the world we live in. As 4A Games continues to work in the midst of conflict, gamers eagerly await the next project in this iconic saga.
