Nintendo now completely owns Xenoblade developer Monolith Soft

After many years of exclusivity, Nintendo finally made it official and acquired the entirety of Monolith Soft.

For the past couple of decades, Monolith Soft has been in a healthy relationship with Nintendo. The Tokyo-based developer known for the Xenoblade Chronicles saga has consistently delivered both exclusive titles and helped the Big N in the development of some of its biggest franchises, being a key part in the creation of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and many more recent games.

Now it seems like Nintendo has chosen to seal the deal, as they’ve increased their investment into Monolith Soft to own it 100%. It’s been a slow process, originally purchasing 80% of the company from Bandai Namco in 2007, and progressively increasing their hold on it little by little. While the makers of the Switch have not made a big announcement about it, the change of administration has been confirmed through the studio’s website.

A long-running partnership

For the past 2 decades, Monolith Soft has worked alongside Nintendo in a wide variety of its series, old and new. Not only were they part of the main development team for Breath of the Wild, as well as the more recent Tears of the Kingdom, but they also helped in the creation of several Animal Crossing, all three Splatoon games, and plenty of other Zelda titles.

However, the studio never abandoned their own projects, which has led to four Xenoblade Chronicles. Aside from the main trilogy of games and various DLC expansions, they also worked on Xenoblade Chronicles X, which is getting a remaster for Switch soon. It’s almost a given that they could be working on many of the upcoming titles for the company, and that we’ll get to see their work next on what we’ve been calling the “Switch 2″ .
