Nintendo plans to avoid Switch 2 scalping by flooding stores with consoles
The scalper situation brought upon by component shortages of the past will seemingly no longer be a problem, as Nintendo has a plan for when the Switch 2 finally releases.
For the past few years, the video game industry (as well as the tech industry in general) has been suffering from component shortages, which led to very limited supply of products and the unfortunate rise of scalpers that made it increasingly hard to obtain new consoles. It was more blatant with the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but when the Nintendo Switch launched back in 2017, it too saw resellers inflating prices and dominating the market.
Now, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa is certain that things will be different when their next console comes to the market. During a recent shareholder call, the CEO of the Big N revealed their plans to counter this problem: “As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand, and this idea has not changed since last year,” he said.
“In addition to this, we are considering whether there are any other measures that can be taken to the extent allowed by laws and regulations, taking into account the circumstances of each region. Although we were unable to produce sufficient quantities of Nintendo Switch hardware last year and the year before due to a shortage of semiconductor components, this situation has now been resolved.”
Thankfully, Furukawa is confident that they’re ready to tackle production of their newest hardware in such a way that the component shortage won’t impact the amount of consoles that’ll come to stores once the console releases.
The successor to the Switch is closer than ever
Earlier this year, Nintendo revealed that their plans for the rest of the year were to release a Nintendo Direct focused on the upcoming NIntendo Switch games of 2024 (which has already come and gone), and that they planned to “make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch withing this fiscal year.”
That timeline puts a window for the release of information about this new console to be revealed at some point before March 2025, although given how they don’t seem to be ready to reveal anything else software-wise in the latter half of the year, it’s widely believed that the next console could be presented at the end of the year. Just in time for holiday pre-orders.
