Nintendo reportedly preparing a Switch 2 OLED model despite recent price increase

A new report suggests an upgraded console with an OLED display is already in the works for a possible 2028 launch.

Update:

Nintendo may already be working on an upgraded version of its Nintendo Switch 2. Just as it did with the first version of the Nintendo Switch, this could be a model with an OLED screen that offers some improvements over the base model.

This information comes from a report by ZDNet Korea, which cites industry sources familiar with Samsung Display’s plans to upgrade the console with an OLED screen, just as was done with the original model.

There is a possibility that Samsung Display will supply the OLED, just as it did for the Switch 1. The extent of the price increase resulting from the adoption of OLED is a variable,” the post on ZDNET Korea explained. According to the data obtained, production of this Switch 2 OLED would not begin until late 2027, meaning the console could arrive in 2028. If so, the upgraded version of the Switch 2 would arrive much sooner than its predecessor did—it took nearly four and a half years for the Switch OLED to launch in late 2021, compared to just three years for this version.

One of the rumored improvements for the Nintendo Switch 2 OLED is an increase in resolution, just as with the original Switch OLED. Apparently, and as the source also indicates, Nintendo originally avoided releasing the Switch 2 with an OLED screen for a reason that is currently affecting the industry: prices. OLED screens cost more than LCD screens. However, this also creates a new problem, as Nintendo has already announced the first price increase for the Nintendo Switch 2 just one year after its launch; the price will go up by $50 on September 1.
