Nintendo Switch surpasses Nintendo DS and is officially the best-selling console in the company’s history

Nintendo Switch has become the best-selling console in Nintendo’s history, surpassing Nintendo DS during the Christmas sales period. The Japanese company announced that it sold 1.36 million units of the original Switch, as reflected in its financial results for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2025. This brings the total number of consoles sold to 155.37 million units.

This figure represents a historic milestone for the company, as the Nintendo Switch has surpassed the total sales of the Nintendo DS, which stand at 154.02 million. The portable console dominated the market at the time and had a huge impact, establishing itself as one of the most important platforms launched by the company, even surpassing its successor, the Nintendo 3DS.

Only one console left to beat for Nintendo Switch

After leaving the Nintendo DS behind, there is only one console left for Nintendo Switch to become the best-selling console of all time. The PlayStation 2 sold more than 160 million units, or so the data was updated a few years ago, so the original Switch still has a way to go; although everything points to it being only a matter of time before it reaches the top of the video game history charts.

Launched in March 2017, Nintendo’s hybrid console was a phenomenon from the outset, driven by a broad and solid catalog. Last year, Nintendo launched its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, which in 29 weeks has already sold 15 million units, making the console the fastest-selling dedicated video game platform released by the company to date, a figure that surpasses the original Switch.
