No, ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s Neel is not a young Max Rebo from Episode VI

The newest Star Wars series has a peculiar alien boy as one of the protagonists, which has led fans to try and find connections with the larger universe.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ stars a group of children that live a normal life on their home planet: they go to school, study and play like any kid from any corner of the galaxy. Life is routine and monotonous, so they dream of something more. They want to live adventures like the Jedi of Legends, so they set out to explore, and in the end they succeed, but at what cost? Lost in the vast galaxy, they will have to find their way home. One of those children is Neel, a young blue boy with an elephant’s trunk. So of course, some have thought that he could be a younger version of Max Rebo, the Ortolan musician who plays in Jabba the Hutt’s palace, or at the very least part of the same species.

Skeleton Crew’, the new original ‘Star Wars’ series, takes place a few years after ‘Episode VI: Return of the Jedi’, so obviously Neel has nothing to do with Rebo. The little one is not even ortholan, as the showrunners themselves confirmed in an interview with TV Line: “It’s a huge galaxy,” recalled John Watts. “There are a lot of blue creatures with elephant trunks out there.” To which Christopher Ford added: “There are many people who look like humans who do not have a trunk and are different colors and shapes, and they do not attract our attention.”

The children live in At Attin, one of the planets that was part of the Old Republic. In the context of the current galaxy, the Galactic Empire has fallen and the New Republic is rebuilding democracy. Although Grand Vizier Mas Amedda has already signed the Galactic Concordat, a peace treaty between the Empire and the Republic, hostilities have not ended. As seen in ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Ahsoka’, some imperial remnants seek the glorious return of the previous regime, years before the First Order wreaks havoc on the galaxy.

‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ arrives today, December 2, to Disney+ with its first two episodes. From then on, there will be a new episode available every Wednesday.
