One Piece decided to introduce a Dragon Ball-style power system, only to discard it in the same arc
Eiichirō Oda’s brief inclusion of a Dragon Ball-style power system.
Since its inception more than two decades ago in 1997, One Piece has become one of the most prominent manga. Its complex world and memorable characters make Eiichirō Oda’s masterpiece a benchmark. Whether it’s the mysterious abilities granted by the Devil Fruits or the secrets of One Piece itself, Oda has always maintained a constant creativity in the evolution of his narrative. In one arc, however, the Japanese Mangaka surprised the public with the introduction of a power system in the purest Dragon Ball style.
The short life of the One Piece power system
First of all, let’s put it in context: the arc in question is titled Enies Lobby Arc and introduced a completely new concept, the One Piece Power System. This was similar to the classic one used in Dragon Ball, allowing characters to channel spiritual energy, perform devastating attacks, and fend off seemingly invincible enemies.
Followers of the manga erupted on social networks with divided opinions. Some celebrated the decision to pay homage to one of Eiichirō Oda’s most influential franchises, while others criticized the inclusion as out of place in such a carefully constructed universe. The controversy reached its peak, however, when Oda removed the power system altogether just a few chapters later.
The One Piece community was both confused and fascinated. Some blamed Oda, while others praised his ability to experiment with new ideas. An event that will undoubtedly become another anecdote in the history of One Piece. More than 1,100 episodes, 25 years, and 19 million viewers make this series a benchmark in manga.
