One Piece: Eiichiro Oda clears up doubts about Shanks and Figarland Garling’s power
Two characters of enormous power who could be linked.
Eiichiro Oda is one of the great figures of our time, an exceptional mangaka who has created a world in ‘One Piece’ that continues to grow and reach more and more people in all kinds of media. The manga continues and, before a three-week hiatus that is about to end, he has answered several questions, some of which involve important characters in the work. This time we learn more about the mysterious and beloved Shanks and his tremendous ability to learn, as well as Figarland Garling and his tremendous power.
The question about Shanks is about his recent encounter with Eustass Kid, one of the most respected pirates on the planet, which was a demonstration of Akagami’s gigantic power. The question is: “The move “Kamusari” (Divine Departure) that was used to one-shot Kid was taught to Shanks by Roger, right? Or did he just learn it by observing it?” Oda’s answer is that “he learned it by observing Roger from the back. No one in the Roger Pirates has been able to imitate it, so Shanks’s talent is truly surprising.”
One Piece and a world full of secrets
Figarland Garling first appeared in chapter 1086 of the manga, introduced as the supreme commander of the Knights of God, a descendant of the Figarland family, to which Shanks himself belongs. Recently his authority has been enhanced by becoming one of the Five Elders, or Gorosei, but what is his power? Oda is asked: “St. Garling fought the pirates of the God Valley Incident, but just how strong is he really?” An answer that fills us with anticipation and makes it clear that “Oh, he’s strong. And there’s a reason for that strength.”
