‘Oppenheimer’ is out of the VFX race in the Oscars: this are the 20 movies with the best effects according to the Academy
Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’is not part of a list released by the Academy that numbers the 20 films of 2023 with the best visual effects, while ‘Barbie’ and ‘Ant-Man’ are.
The internet is burning. It’s as if someone had detonated an atomic bomb in them. And behind the event is Christopher Nolan again, although as a victim and not as the responsible. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has shared a list of 20 films in the running for the Oscar Award for best visual effects and ‘Oppenheimer’ is not among them. Even having recreated a nuclear explosion without CGI (here is the explanation of how he did it), the director has been left out of the running for the most famous awards in the film industry.

Did ‘Oppenheimer’ deserve to be among the Oscar nominees?
Although many have left in disbelief, especially when among the nominees there are films like ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ (precisely criticized for their effects), the truth is that ‘Oppenheimer’ is, alongside ‘Tenet’, the film with the least visual effects of Nolan’s entire filmography, and also by far as the Culture Crave table below shows.
Aside from this setback, the truth is that there are still many categories for Oppenheimer to join in the fight, including the main courses (film, direction, and actors). We’ll see how it ends up going.
