Oscars nominations announcement delayed due to Los Angeles fires
January 19 is the new date for the announcement of the top nominees in all categories.
The next Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. There is very little time left to know the nominees for the major categories, with voting taking place between January 8 and January 12. However, although the announcement was scheduled for Saturday, January 17, the Academy has decided to postpone the announcement of the nominees until Sunday, January 19, due to the fires in the state of California and the Los Angeles area. As a result, the voting period has also been extended.
In addition to the Oscar nominations announcement, other major events such as the BAFTA Awards Tea Party, the Critics Choice Awards, the American Film Institute (AFI) Awards and the Screenwriters Guild Awards nominations announcement have been postponed.
Hollywood, the last affected area
The Hollywood section of the city of Los Angeles was one of the last areas to be affected by the devastating fire. In fact, the Walk of Fame is threatened by the fire, and flames have been spotted on the famous sign that gives the area its name. There are currently six active wildfires in Los Angeles County, which includes cities such as Burbank, Compton, Long Beach, Pasadena, Carson, Glendale, Malibu, and Santa Monica.
So far, the fires have claimed the lives of 5 people and forced the evacuation of more than 130,000. Among the most famous people in the entertainment world who have lost their homes to the flames are actor and host Billy Crystal and businesswoman Paris Hilton, as well as Jamie Lee Curtis and Guillermo del Toro, who have had to evacuate their homes.
