Paramount confirms World War Z 2, reviving the zombie franchise nearly a decade later
The studio reopens the door to Max Brooks’ universe after shelving the project back in 2019.
The 2013 film ‘World War Z’, starring Brad Pitt, will finally get a sequel. The announcement was made during Paramount Pictures’ panel at CinemaCon 2026, as part of the studio’s new strategy to strengthen and expand its major franchises. The announcement came as part of a broader reveal, during which Paramount also unveiled new projects related to franchises such as Transformers, Star Trek, and G.I. Joe, in addition to confirming the release date for the highly anticipated film adaptation of Call of Duty.
This isn’t the first time there have been attempts to make a sequel to ‘World War Z’. Following the success of the first film, which grossed nearly $540 million worldwide, plans were made to develop a sequel. However, after director Marc Forster left the project, J. A. Bayona was considered, and David Fincher eventually took the director’s chair. Even so, in 2019 Paramount decided to cancel pre-production due to budget issues. Later, Fincher expressed relief that the project didn’t move beyond this stage, as he found many similarities with The Last of Us.
A New Opportunity
Although Paramount has yet to share more details about its plans for this sequel, now might be a good time to give the source material the respect it deserves. The film is inspired by Max Brooks’ ‘World War Z’, and beyond what we saw in the movie starring Brad Pitt, the book follows an oral narrative through the testimonies of survivors of the war against the zombies.
From patient zero in China to the way the virus spread across the globe, the story unfolds in very different contexts. While the film only used elements such as Israel’s protection as a walled city, the book addresses more human aspects in a story that belongs not to a single person, but to all the survivors.
