Paramount moves on from the ‘Kelvin’ Crew as Star Trek heads for a reboot: report
Despite the cast’s interest in returning, the next Star Trek film will reportedly chart a new creative course.

The long-running saga of the fourth Star Trek film featuring the cast of the J.J. Abrams-produced reboot has reportedly come to an end. According to recent reports, Paramount, now under the new leadership of Skydance boss David Ellison, has decided to chart a new course for the franchise, opting for a completely fresh reboot rather than continuing the adventures of the Kelvin Timeline crew, which has not been seen on the big screen since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
The business is moving forward
The new studio direction appears motivated by the financial performance of the last film. Star Trek Beyond underperformed globally, earning $343.4 million, a noticeable drop from its predecessors, Star Trek Into Darkness ($467.3 million) and 2009’s Star Trek ($385.6 million).
Ultimately, the new board led by David Ellison has reportedly “moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.” This decision paves the way for a new iteration of Star Trek on the big screen, potentially with a new cast and a completely different creative direction for theatrical releases.
Despite the nearly decade-long gap since the last film, the actors have consistently voiced their strong desire to return. In August, Simon Pegg (Scotty and co-writer of Beyond) publicly stated that the time was right for a sequel, noting that Ellison, who recently led Skydance’s successful $8 billion takeover of Paramount, is a “big Star Trek fan.” Pegg expressed his hope that they could make another film. “I think it’s about time. It would be great to see us 10 years after the five year mission, where we are.”
