Peter Jackson and his team are already planning a new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy
Scriptwriter Philippa Boyens has revealed there are still many stories left in Middle-Earth and hints at Peter Jackson working on a new Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Only a few hours have passed since the premiere of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’, the new anime film set in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Unlike the ‘Rings of Power’ series, this production was made by Peter Jackson’s team, which is already working on new adventures. So far, only ‘The Hunt for Gollum’, the return of the saga to live action, has been confirmed. But there is also another feature film in preparation, of which no details have been revealed. And now, screenwriter Philippa Boyens has dropped a new bomb: they would like to make “a new epic trilogy” in the future.
“There’s a lot of [possibilities], when you look at it, there’s a lot of things in there, actually,” he commented in an interview with The Playlist. “One of the things this [’War Of The Rohirrim’] story has shown us is that a stand-alone story works really successfully within the world of Middle-earth and I would genuinely—because I’ve fallen in love with the form—love to see another anime. But that depends on the audiences out there, your audience, fans of not only the original trilogy, but that vast anime audience. I’m really interested to see what they think.”
The near future of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ in the cinema lies in independent films
Boyens has made it clear that if people want new stories they will have them, since there are still many “really interesting” stories that have not yet been contacted. “my preference would be, after ‘Hunt For Gollum,’ would be to look at those stand-alone stories. And then if we got really ambitious—there are some epic, particular stories that could translate into that more traditional epic trilogy format that was the original ‘Lord Of The Rings,’ the war of the rings story.”
